Any suggestions for family fun camping activities?
With the price of gas this Summer my family won't be planning any out of state road trips to visit relatives. Because we live in Washington state (3 years now) and have not been out much to enjoy it we have planned a Summer of family camping trips. My husband and I have two children (Girl 10 and Boy 6) We really want to make it a great Summer for the family! We plan to camp the Forest, Lakes and Ocean Beaches.... Any suggestion for some fun outdoor activities to bring along or do while out camping? Aside from hiking, swimming... Something entertaining we can mix with the normal camping fun.. Thank you in advance and have a great Summer!

- Flashlight tag Old fashioned lightning bug collecting in a jar scavenger hunt Creating a journal/diary (picture and words) about each of your camping trips, no matter how boring the kids think they are. You'll all definitely cherish those memories as the kids get older. Have EVERYONE contribute.
- Un-Natural Nature Hike: While your children are doing something else, walk along a trail and put things on bushes that are not natural to the outdoors (i.e. paper clips, ribbons, jar covers, misc junk) then give them a bag and have them hike and seek! Bake a cake in a cardboard box! Start 8-10 charcoals in a tin coffee can. When they are well lit, dump them into a alum pie tin, place this on bottom of heavy cardboard box (beer case box works best!) Put 4 empty soup cans in each corner, cover with a rack (like a cookie cooling rack). Place your cake on the rack and close the lids. Make sure there is one hole on the bottom of one side of the box and a hole on the opposite top side of the box for air flow. There is a ratio of charcoals to temp but I forget it. We use 8-10 and it takes 20-30 min to bake this breakfast roll: take a round alum jello mold. Slice tabs of butter on bottom, sprinkle brown sugar/cinnamon then lay pillsbury rolls cut in quarters on top. Bake in your box. Have fun!!
- Get them involved with every thing! Setting up camp, cleaning up after meals etc. This can actually be allot of fun for kids. Also look into getting some field guides for your area. Birds, mammals, and plants and go for a nature hike. Try to identify as many things as you can, and give them notebooks to record everything they can find. It's fun and it helps them become more familiar with their environment. Games are also a good pastime while camping. Frisbee, horseshoes, tossing a football. Glow in the dark Frisbees are cool too! Have fun!

- love wa state, was raised there. great camping in the rain forrest on the olympic pennisula and mountain top lakes in the cascades. for a really great time check our Ross Lake. We occupy our time with our kids by stacking rocks on the river to see who can get them the tallest. make up sharades, actually talk about life issues, get great answers when away from society. Frisby golf, make trees your target and assign point value to them. We also like to teach the kids a new skill while we are out, like orienteering, teach them how to use a compass, read a map, start a fire, set up their own camp and tent, mark a trail, edible flowers, etc. skills for life. Have fun!
- Take some glue and cardboard and make collages with your kids. Take pen and paper and write Grandma letters. Take a picture of everyone doing something SILLY. Happy Caving Carroll
- Great area to live in! I use to live in Spokane, and we camped in Metaline Falls, up near the Canadian border. The campground was called Sullivan Lake campground. We would also camp over in Idaho, and Montana! My family and I would take board games and play at night. We would bring our badmitton set and play, would bring the plastic horseshoe set and play on the beach, which was so fun.Enjoy your camping trip and the rest of your summer.
