- One of the things they might enjoy is making a collections of "urban myths" that they are familiar with. When I did this in the class room, a lot of the kids were surprised that more than one area had the same "ghost on the rail road tracks" story or the same "gravity hill story. Even thought they were suposed to be unique to the area the teller is from. Look at sources. Do most of these tales come from a FOAF? (Friend Of A Friend) Another fun activity is to look at home rememdies A popular one where I grew up was to put butter on a burn. Turns out -- not such a good idea. If you have the resources for doing some research online this is a good area to explore. Almost everyone has home remedies. (Another example - if you have a bad sinus head ache - take a hot shower and then use a blowdryer on your hair - it works because of the heat and steam.) A good follow up craft for the home rememdy unit would be to have every one assemble a mini first aid kit. We did this in Girl scouts. Use a film canister with lid as the container. (ask for them for free at a photo developing place) Put in two bandaids, a piece of hard candy, a couple of packed alcohol swabs, a 2x2 wrapped piece of gauze, a quarter to make a phone call, and a length of medical tape. Put everything in the container except for the medical tape. Wrap that around the outside of the container. Finally loop a piece of twine around the container and attach a saftey pin. Pin this on for small hiking trips and treat boo-boos as necessary. You can get creative about what you put in your first aid kit. Try publishing a book on the computer with rememdies that do work. Have warnings about ones that don't. HAve the kids illustrate it as well. Try testing the eating one hour before you swim myth -- just have someone on guard duty! Go to the mythbusters web site - -they have projects there as well. http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/quiz/quiz.html http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/games/mythsunmasked/mythsunmasked.html http://shopping.discovery.com/product-60219.html These websites is great for urban myths. www.snopes.com http://urbanlegends.about.com/ http://tafkac.org/ Hope all this helps.
