I am looking for some inexpensive crafts or activities for an overnight girl scout camping trip.?

Hi! I'm taking my girl scout troop on an overnight camping trip, and am looking for fun girly things to do. The majority of the group are 8 years old, so I need some activities to fit that age range. We are a large group of 16, so I'm trying to find some new inexpensive crafts and activities.

  1. Weave friendship bracelets. You need silk yarn, maybe some beads or charms, something to cut the yarn with. They can braid them, or knot them, Everyone can work on each one, pass them along, and when they are done, every girl will have a friendship bracelet that every girl has put something of herself into. I thought of this myself, but then when I googled it I found this site: Friendship bracelets We taught how to make friendship bracelets as part of the Golden Gate bridging on June 3, 1999. A copy of the handout is below, followed by a list of Internet sites with detailed instructions and patterns. We hope that you enjoy making friendship bracelets! Basic instructions 1. Each bracelet starts with an overhand knot leaving a "tail" of about 3 inches. 2. Grip your knotted strings with a clipboard or tape onto a table. 3. Finish each bracelet with an overhand knot with 3 inch "tails" as well. You can braid the tails - or put beads on them. 4. Tie your finished bracelets loosely around your friend's wrist with a square knot. 5. The basic knot is used in all the bracelets either going left to right or right to left. To do the basic knot, wrap the knitting string around its neighbor string - both held tight and taut. Do this twice to complete the knot. The knot should be the color of the knotting string. It it's not, you didn't hold both strings taut enough or you're wrapping the strings in the wrong direction. --------------------------------- Go to the site, it has pictures and other links to help and other ideas.
  2. make ice cream in a can! That's what we did on our camp trip when I was little! haha Take a folgers can and put ice and rock salt in it...be generous..... then in a large bag put ice cream makings in it....I only have a little recipe but you can double triple or whatever it! haha...here it is 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 cup milk or half and half 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 1 large ziploc bag Just mix the ingredients...set in the can and shut it and then KICK IT AROUND!!!! It usually only takes like 5-8 minutes to make! HAVE FUN! =0)
  3. When I was in girl scouts we used a coffee can and a candle to cook bacon. Try www.getcrafty.com You can also just buy one of those bug containers at wal-mart and have them find a bug to put in it and collect the leaves and water and stuff. Catching lightning bugs is fun too.
  4. you dont say how long you will stay so if it is just the first overnight probably the easiest is making the friendship bracelet or maybe braiding hair ribbons or making their own patches....if it is a weekend of camping maybe try some simple tyedying or print making using either something the girls have found on the trip or creating a shirt that means something to the girls(like a smybol that all of them like or something that includes all of the girls like) or try something more along the nature or native crafts...like dreamcatchers, or rock gardens, or get a craft book from the library and have the girls choose from one or two to try....maybe even ask at your local gs office to see if they have some old copies of old girls scout books they seem to have some of the best nature crafts and good camp ideas
