Camping question, bringing nephew..need ideas.?
I'm taking my 6 year old nephew camping for the first time. I'm stuck at what fun things we could do together. My husband is going to take him fishing, and we're going swimming, and hiking...I'm not sure what else to do. I want him to have fun and remember his first camping experience. He's wicked excited and I don't want him to be disappointed...any ideas?

- Involve him when it is time to cook dinner and spend time at the camp fire. Where will yo be going to? I ask because if it is to a location where there is a ranger, certainly interpretive walks and the campfire show come into play
- Well don't tell him any scary stories or jump out of the dark and scream or he might not sleep the night and might not ever go camping again. Here's a huge list of camp games sure to delight and amaze: http://www.ultimatecampresource.com/site/camp-activities/camp-games.html
- Take some games for the evenings b/4 bedtime. Pick up sticks is one our children always enjoyed playing. And Old Maid. Coloring books and crayons are good for quiet time, also. At that age, he may have the energy, but he won't have the stamina to hike, hike, hike all day! Assuming it is a camping ground where he may keep things he picks up like pebbles, feathers and such from his walks, take a sack or small box along for him to collect these 'treasures' to take back and show to his parents.
- your talkin about a 6 yr old. show him the stars, rollover some logs or rocks. show him all the different bugs n stuff.build a lean to.try asking him what hed like to do But most of all HAVE FUN! Enjoy. Scotty T
- A nature hike is like the walk through a wildlife reserve, but if the trails are not marked(PLEASE DON'T DROP BREAD CRUMS) use bright MULTI COLORED RIBBON to tie around a tree or tree branch, that can be seen about 100 ft. away! OR bring a book on trees(or wildlife) and pick a leaf or two! and dont forget about - daddy long leggers, and catterpillers, and salimanders! (my child is 6)
- Make him do all the cleaning.
- I took my 6 year old nephew last year was his first. Good old roasting marshmallow and hot dogs was great to him. Also be sure he brings some toys he likes to play with. Ask him questions about them. Be sure to have snacks and drinks he likes, include him in camp set up and all other aspects ( collecting firewood ect). take him stargazing at night. Most of all let him be a kid don't orce him into things he'weary of.
- Go on a gentle hike. Other wise at 6, playing in the dirt is damn exciting. You might consider taking a few board games, age appropriate of course. Sometimes just hanging out in the outdoors is memorable enough.
- Hi, You could try hanging a white sheet up at night and shining the car headlights on it for it for a while. You usually find a great collection of flying insects when you inspect it.....take a magnifying glass and stand bye surprise at what you have. During the day take a regular one gallon water bottle. Slice the top off so that you can make a funnel with it. In the base put a small amount of honey or something sweet. Invert the top and tape it to the bottom of the bottle so it makes a funnel trap. Bury the trap so that the top is just level with the surface, and the next day see what you have. If there are bears where you are going camping bury the trap well away from your camp site. My best suggestion is to find some other 6 year old children and let them run wild! Have fun.
- At 6, they are good at making their own fun. But here are a few ideas: - Let him bring a small bag of toys with to play at the camp site. - Get a camp site close to the playground (if there is one at the campground). - Some campgrounds have kids activities. Get him involved in these if they do. - Check out some of the attractions in the area. - Try Geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com/) - Roast marshmallows at night over the fire and make Smores - If you have electricity, bring a couple movies and a portable DVD player to watch if you get stuck in the camper/tent because of rain The biggest thing is to ask him what HE wants to do camping, and then fit that into the trip. I'm going camping today with my 5 year old son, and I got him involved in the planning for the trip from the beginning. I even let him pick where we are going (I printed out maps of several state parks within 2 hours and let him pick the one we are going to).
