What are the best camping safely tips?

My children and I have been tent camping regularly in National Forest areas and I would like to continue, but the recent bear attack on the poor boy in Utah has me thinking twice. I do not own a gun and so far have just followed the no food in camp rule as a precaution. What can I do to protect myself and my children other than not going?

  1. One word....Bears!
  2. Dont go camping where the bears live and youll be cool.
  3. Take nothing for granted and expect anything.
  4. First off, just because there are bears in the woods doesn't mean they will eat you. It does happen but not beacuse the bears is out to eat human, it's just because he's hungry. After the bears attack here in Utah I started reading up on camping saftey. Here are a few things I learned. Don't cook near where your sleeping. Wash your hands after cooking. Make sure all food is put away in tight sealed containers, and it isn't near your tent. Change your clothes after cooking. Talk to your local forest ranger and ask if there has been many sightings, if so you may want to look for a new location. Safe camping!!
  5. Besides what the lady above me said, you could purchase a can of pepper spray intended for use against bears such as this one from Counter Assault: http://www.rei.com/product/623173 Also keep in mind that bear attacks are extremely rare and you're more likely to die driving to the woods or getting struck by lightning.
  6. I would get information on bear safety and stay away from areas that have seen many bears in the area.
