Camping For The First Time- Tips Please?

How can we camp out longer than 1 night if we don't have ice to keep our fresh produce and milk cold? What foods do you take when you go camping? We have a limited budget, we can't afford to buy fancy gadjets, but we need some basic stuff, so what do you regard as camping essentials? So far we have the tent, sleeping bags and whole lot of bug spray.

  1. COOLERS preferably 5 day coolers if you put ice in them the ice will melt but more slowly and the water will stay cold enough to keep your food good for up to 5 days you need a cooler and ice unless you want warm beverages and no fresh foods also meat will spoil
  2. My suggestion would be - dont go!!! TRUST ME - Your bed at home will be far more comfortable!! :-) If you really really insist on going dont forget a little portable gas burner that you can boil water on and cook on. And if you forget look for campsites where they provide coin operated barbeques for cooking, along with showers and loos. Dont take gourmet foods or a hair dryer - there is not usually any power anywhere. And most important - DONT FORGET THE TOILET PAPER!!!
  3. in some camp sites they have stores to buy more ice, or sometimes we put milk and such in the cold river (not letting it go away of course) but ummmm well we went for 1 week and it did not spoil just keep it somewhere cool. you also need...well i dunno anything to keep you entertained, flashlights, all night time stuff, lamps for the night, bring extra warm stuff cause it gets kinda cold at night, and well i cant think of anything else...sorry. hope i helped a bit.
  4. try DRY ICE--it lasts much longer then regular ice---but DO NOT TOUCH it with your hands or ANYTHING.. it will burn you badly and immediately...if you can't get dry ice (it IS very hard to find)....get LARGE BLOCK ICE that won't melt as fast in your cooler---then bring eggs, cheese, bacon, hot dogs, burgers, buns and rolls, make up a macaroni salad ahead of time and bring that in an air-tight sealed bowel, Maybe a few can's of baked beans, BUTTER, Milk and juice---pots and pans for cooking---you can buy cheap Camping cooking pans at Walmart...utensils (preferably plastic)---mixing spoons and a spatchula...and a frying pan...Brillo pads for cleaning and DISH soap. Paper towels and toilet paper....garbage bags and baggies.. Plastic cups, Catsup and mustard, salt, pepper, if you want anything like Chicken or steak, get that stuff at a local store near where you camp...pillows.. AIR MATTRESSES to put UNDER the sleeping bags--trust me you do NOT really WANT to sleep directly on the ground....matches or lighters....and a lantern or two.. and FLASHLIGHTS!!! Rain ponchos (just in case) and shorts, jeans and long and short sleeve shirts...a couple sets of each in case you get dirty, wet or bloody... fishing poles and fishing gear and your FISHING LICENSES... that should basically do it.... OH maybe a battery powered radio...... ALSO---very important.... a FIRST AID KIT
  5. I consider this my top ten list for camping: 1. Rain gear, coated nylon poncho or waterproof/breathable suit. 2. Tent, ground sheet 3. Mummy bag (rated to minimum temp expected) 4. Foam sleeping pad(s) or insulated inflatable pad (Thermarest) 5. Camp stove, utensils, knife, cups, plates, etc. 6. Cooler, full of ice and perishable food 7. Bug spray 8. Sunscreen 9. First Aid Kit 10. Flashlight, spare batteries
  6. OFF. it keeps bugs and misquittoes at bay. Ice chest. bacon eggs. Instant Coffee Instant oatmeal, tea kettle to heat water. Spring bottled water. lots of cans of veggies beef stew and soda pop and ice for the ice chest. frying pan and a cooking pan and a small two burner Coleman cooking stove. A small lantern and flashlites. A fishing rod and reel for catching fish along the shore, and don't forget a box of good safety matches to lite your lantern and your stove. I know its basic stuff but it will get your camping off to a good start to have these items. Good luck with your fishing. Nothing better than cooking fresh caught fish over a camp fire or coleman stove right there at the campsite
  7. 1) You can't. You need ice. Don't use ice cubes. They melt too fast. Freeze water in milk jugs or plastic containers. They'll last longer. 2) Buy a big cooler - a name brand one. I have a 100 qt Igloo and that acts as my fridge. 3) Food - buy lot's of things that don't require alot of cooking (dogs, burgers, etc) and will last in the cooler. If it's meats you won't eat for 3-4 days, freeze them first, then put them in the cooler. Steal condiment and untensil packs from restaurants like Wendy's. 4) Tent, cooler, sleeping bags, bug spray, flashlights, battery operated lamp for in the tent at night, good pocket knife, small sledge hammer, rope, small broom, rain gear, water proof matches, air mattresses, cooking grill, tongs, marshmallows, band aids, folding chairs, paper plates, wash tub, dish/bar soap. There are a billion things you need - too many to list.
  8. you deffinatly need an ice box and decent warm sleeping bags also an air bed or camping mattress to go under your sleeping bags over wise you could get v. cold and uncomfertable. I also recommened a pack of cards, if you are on a budget then you probably wont be going out too much and playing cards can take up hours and give you something to do. You also deffinatly need a torch/light of some sort. If you have kids then a football might be an idea. Have fun!
  9. You can borrow some items from a friend or family. You don't need all those fancy gadgets. You may need a small propane grill, flashlights or laterns. If there is a Wal Mart, Target, go check out prices. I think you can get a latern for around $10.00. I think we got our propane grill between $20-$30. I bought some cooking utensils for $10 back in May at Wal Mart. Foods hamburger, hot dogs, steak, chips, easy to make stuff. If you have friends or family that camp check and see if you can borrow some items from them.
