Camping Out Ideas

Got any tips on camping?

My hubby and I can't afford to go abroad this year so we bought a tent and plan to go camping in the summer with our 6 year old daughter. We've never done this before. Any tips on what/what not to do? Should have mentioned I will be in UK

  1. bring a knife
  2. I know its not reall a holiday, but me and the kids camped out the back garden, summer before last; they loved it..
  3. skeeter spray....
  4. the pennines
  5. Be prepared for all types of weather, take plenty of warm clothes etc. Take a couple of collapsable seats with you, just relax & have a great time
  6. Yes always bring supplies for the baby and its need and make sure the baby does no sleep on the tent floor.
  7. I love to go camping .....just make sure its a good dry tent ...blowup matress is a must if your going for any lenght of time ...warm sleepingbag or quilt . most of all enjoy ! XXxx
  8. If you are in bear country, don't leave any food around your tent, or inside your tent. Come to think of it, if you are in bear country, try to stay in a cabin.
  9. you will wake up at 6am freezing cold every morning, i did when i was camping didnt like it at all. .Sorry.x
  10. YES keep all items away from the sides of the tent, for if it rains every thing will get wet. brng lots of extra clothes. And a portable grill always helps.oh and flashlights batteries and lots of bug repellent, snake bite kit.The snake bite kit you can find in the camping supply isle,we've never used ours but good to have. And sunscreen. Have fun good luck.
  11. Dont touch the tent canvass with your fingers it will let the rain in.
  12. don't wipe your bum with three-leave plants
  13. dont forget toliet paper =]
  14. Start in the back yard, then try somewhere really close until you figure out if it is for you or not. If you don't like it or the weather is awful, you can bail out.
  15. yes, bring some playing cards and other fun stuff to do. Bring bug spray - that is a must. If your going way out in the sticks you should keep your food in a cooler at night to avoid animals. Bring cream for poison ivy, some people arent effected by it, but some are. Camping by a lake can be fun becuase you can fish and swim, its okay to eat the fish out of most cold water lakes - but thats your call.
  16. Take thermals for night time. Take loads of bog-paper and wet wipes. don't pitch on sand. Don't pitch in a dip. Don't cook inside your tent. Take a small bottle of white spirit, if you soak a rag in it and hang it off a nearby tree it keeps the wasps away when you're cooking.
  17. .bug spray, lots of ice, sunscreen lotion, umbrella for beach (shade), firewood, matches, Colman propane stove, barbecue, water and a propane heater....have fun, i love camping
  18. Don't forget the TP! Honestly there are a couple of dozens things you could forget to bring so go through the things you will want to bring in your head and write them down. Maybe you should get a book on camping if this is your first time going. There is always something you wish you would have done or brought. Good Luck!
  19. Bring a hammock and enjoy the sounds of nature (especially if you are camping by a stream). For your little girl, collect rocks and leaves and things.
  20. You want to take food in containers that will not let the smell out because it will attract all kinds of animals. Make sure to take a small axe for fire wood. An Iron Skillet, comfortable shoes, sleeping bags w/ pillows, walking sticks are helpful, sun screen, and a compass. Have fun.
  21. Unpack your tent and check everything is present, practice putting it up in your garden or an open space. Buy some heavy duty tent pegs as the supplied ones are useless for hard ground.
  22. Cool. We used to go camping with our kids all the time. Make sure your daughter has old cloths that you don't care get dirty or even ruined. Make sure you have extra cloths along in case you get wet. You may want to get a tarp to put over the tent if it could rain. Most tents are really not that waterproof. Have plenty of rope, to tie the tarp up with and as a cloths line to dry cloths. Have a cook stove so you can cook. You can't count on cooking over a fire if it is raining. Rain doesn't have to spoil your camping trip there are lots of things you can do in the rain (as long as it isn't too cold). If it is raining it is a great time to go frog catching, especially at night. Get one of those bug magnifier things so your daughter can look at bugs and stuff. Now I want to go camping. Have fun.
  23. awesome. camping is great fun. become a member of the camping and caravaning club (you can google search it). and that will give you access to loads of sites to stay at. they have facilities like showers, loos and washing up, and so you don't need to worry about that. you can also take a small cooker, and cook on that, or go to local resturants. some sites even have onsite resturants. and also most have childrens play parks so your little one should love it. i have been camping since i was a baby, and i recommend it to all.
  24. what i do is in my attic i have everything i need in one place a basin with plates cups etc tin opener ,rubber mallet ,clothes pegs etc i got a fold up table from argos that opens up and gives you chairs and table ,i got a gas stove with grill . what i want to get this year is a cheap gazebo and a wind breaker the gazebo's are being used by alot of campers to have a table and cooking area beside the tent but giving you more space the windbreaker will give you more privacy around the opening of your tent . put the tent up before you go so u are familar with it and folding is a pain so try remember how it looked before you unfolded it from bag dry the tent before packing aswell if you ever pack a tent damp (maybe raining and u are leaving campsite ) always when u get home dry it out to avoid mildew starting . you dont need to buy everything for camping ie pots etc you can bring from home infact my supply of camping stuff built up over the years . One great thing i do have is a cigarette lighter powered pump for the airbeds about £5 from argos its great. remember everything write a list saves you so much money washing liquid brushes wipes loo roll everything u have in the house already salt vinegar etc .if you are using a coolbox buy extra ice packs so when a couple are getting frozen you still have some in the cooler (most sites have facilites to freeze icepacks) pack the car up and repack again dont worry i do this all the time to squeeze everything into the car and use the back seat aswell . books and lights and playing cards for evening and board games if u have any ,i pick parks that are near country parks so we all go walking during day. buy some portable bbq's or bring a small one ,dont forget a corkscrew depends where you are staying not all places have a tescos for cheaper shopping lol any more questions email me i go cmaping either with the whole family or me and kids only and i can put up and take down tent by myself infact when hubby's about thats when its annoying lol
  25. Camping with a six year old can be a challenge. Bring things a six year old would enjoy doing at a campground would be my first suggestion. Are there campgrounds in your area with playgrounds? We have them here in the US. We always enjoyed just being out away from the TV and phones relaxing. Having other families provided a lot of fun and entertainment.
  26. take 2 torches in case 1 breaks and watch u don't get eat way bears and foxes lol.
