Camping Out Ideas

where can I buy cheap backpacking equipment?

I'm going to the south pacific and southeast asia, and I do not have any equipment. Where can I get a cheap but good-quality backpack, sleeping bag, tent, and other camping and traveling gear. VERY LOW BUDGET!

  1. Try the local army surplus store. I have found many good bargans at the one in my hometown...
  2. try http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=226&catalogId=40000000226&langId=-1 don't get too cheap or you'll regret not having quality equipment. also, rei has good sales on last yrs season equipment if you hit them at the right time..
  3. For a really low-budget and lightweight backpacking stove, build yourself a Pepsi-can alcohol stove. http://www.pcthiker.com/pages/gear/pepsistove.shtml If you'll be camping in warm weather, it will be lighter and probably more comfortable to get a lightweight net hammock, bug screen, and rain fly instead of dragging around a tent. Great deals on backpacking equipment can also be found at Goodwill and other thrift stores, garage sales, etc. Another option is to borrow gear from friends. I've let several friends borrow a backpack for travels to distant lands.

  5. Root around backpacker hostel message boards, you often find cheap stuff (often free), as people are trying to get rid of thier stuff quickly and getting on a plane, etc. I got loads of goodies and got rid of loads this way.
